Anger, sadness, frustration and now desperation: these are the various emotions that go through one’s mind when thinking about the situation in Swat at the moment:
Anger because it is Fazlullah’s and al-Qa’ida’s extremists (may Allah destroy them) that have brought this misery upon the innocent Muslims of the NWFP.
Sadness because the NWFP was one of the most safe, beautiful and religiously devout areas in the world.
Frustration because the Pakistani army has been playing with the lives of innocent people whilst it played politics with Fazlullah, Afghanistan, the UK, America and all the other enemies of Islam who are currently benefiting from this disaster.
Desperation because that is now the true reality on the ground now: desperate.
Please help your brothers and sisters and donate generously. May Allah reward the good folks from Human Appeal and increase their efforts and success to help alleviate the distress of the innocent.
We can only ask Allah and complain to him of our inability to protect and provide for our weak ones, and our inability to get rid of the disease of extremism and violence from within our ranks. May He give us the tawfiq to change our condition and may He continue to shower us with His infinite mercy, ameen.

Salaam,
Its nice to see your still posting Kiffaya, all the boys from cheadle send their Salaam.
I remember when I travelled through Sawat, upto Kalaam, it amazing to me to see how war has destroyed their lives, i remember how simple the people were, the locals would spend time on the “khats” eating mangos by the river side.
Abu Eesa, is it a sign of jahl in a person if he feels more sorrow for the distress of muslims from his nation?
Its a strange situation, the pakistani army fighting what could be described as the kawarij for a secular purpose yet still performing what many would consider a great jihad.

As-Salaamu ‘alaikum,
I don’t believe any of us here favour a secular regime, but Pakistan is a country where Muslims are free to be Muslims, unlike in some other places, but that doesn’t mean Muslims want gangs of thugs going round beating up people without burqas or beards.

Perhaps you should notice that AE said:
“Fazlullahs and Al Qaidahs extremists – may Allah destroy them.”
Not:
“Faslullah and Al Qaidah – may Allah destroy them.”
If there is one thing we Muslims are good at is reading things out of context.

Unfortunately many (natural) emotions are flowing through the body at the moment.
Swat was one of the rare places to remain ‘pure’ from the negative influences of globalisation and all of it’s ills. It had many of the neccessary ingredients to revive a ’shariah’ ruled area. Most importantly, that the people loved Islam and wanted it’s laws. Now as many feared, it has instead become another Baghdad with people fleeing and no stability seemingly in sight.
Though we may disagree with how our brothers conducted this ‘call’, personally I’d hesitate to make dua against them (or any of their specific versions). It seems many of our seniors are just gritting their teeth in public, advising in private and hoping that it will be ‘peacefully’ resolved as soon as possible. This is one of the reasons Allah has given them their virtue as people of knowledge, so that they can guide us and be examples in times like these. As with many political situations, the issues are very complicated and not easy to assess for the average individual. You won’t understand it just by watching clips, whether on BBC, youtube or the latest Islamic production elsewhere.
All it seems we can do is support in what we think will help us on the Last Day and be very careful of the many difficult and hazy scenarios of our current world, all the time asking Allah to show us the right path and stay firm upon it. Wallahu a’lam.

The above three comments from three different people show why these insane maniacs from Fazlullah’s party and others from al-Qa‘idah – dressed as Mujahideen – have got away with what they have. It is truly incredible that we have Muslims who believe that there is still ambiguity and doubt over the Khariji actions of these people who spill the blood of the Muslims in a manner only equalled by the crusading “West” and other notable disbelieving aggressors in past history.
Their continual murder of innocent Muslims cannot garner further excuses and a pathetic sitting on the fence such as the last comment above. They bomb a Masjid and accept responsibility for it: “They were the Shi‘ah! It’s Ok!” They bomb another Masjid and accept responsibility for it: “They were Brelwis! It’s Ok!” They bomb a market place: “They’re Sufis! It’s Ok!” They bomb a police station: “They’re apostates! It’s Ok!” A Deobandi Masjid gets bombed, people’s houses get bombed, our elders and jirga leaders get murdered and suddenly: “It wasn’t us! It was the Americans! It was the Army! It was the Zionists!”
My fellow Muslims, there is no disagreement with “our brothers”. The Prophet (s) in Sahih Muslim said, “Whoever raises arms against us is not one of us.”
I ask Allah to destroy and kill every one of these murderers, only because I don’t have the pleasure of having the Prophet (s) here to do it for us.
He (s) said about these Khawarij as narrated in Bukhari’s Sahih, “If I were to reach them, I would destroy them like the people of ‘Aad were destroyed.”
He also said in the authentic narration, “They are the worst of people, the worst of all creatures. Success is for whoever kills them or they kill him. They will call to the book of Allah yet they have nothing to do with it. Whoever fights against them has more of a haqq upon Allah than they do.”
Brothers and sisters, this is a media, propaganda and ‘aqidah war against these extremists and murderers and their supporters from young disillusioned and ignorant Muslims around the globe. The armies of secularism killing the Muslims around the world our indeed our enemy, but they are our open and clear enemy. It is these Khawarij who are the secret and more confusing and more dangerous enemy who have done almost as much damage if not more than the Secularist and Crusader armies. They must be rooted out and destroyed in whatever way we can, by the pen, by the tongue and even by the various lashkars that our villagers are being forced into creating as did the tribes in ‘Iraq to get rid of this disease.
And to Allah alone do we complain.

Asalaamualiakum, The situation in Swat is much worse than what we are lead to believe by the media in this country. It’s the biggest displacement of people in recent history-bigger than Darfur, Bosnia and Rwanda. These people have gone further than Peshawar and to the border in search of shelter and food and have been unequivocally told to leave immediately by the tribal leaders. I was putting up posters around Manchester for the charity event in aid of the people of Swat as AE mentioned, and a few people from the region began giving me personal, eye witness accounts of what’s actually happening…A woman from Swat told me that her nephews and nieces their haven’t eaten in 3 weeks and was weeping in front of me as she told me this. The appalling level of apathy and procrastination shown by the Muslim public is due to a multitude of reasons-donor fatigue especially since Gaza wasn’t that long ago, it being an internal man-made conflict, Muslims killing Muslims and a lack of media coverage-out of sight, out of mind. No matter what the reasons are, there are innocent people in the middle of this mess and we need to help urgently. One of my abiding memories of Swat from when I visited it last in 2000, was standing on a mountain top (which took 3 hrs and 3 km to climb) and witnessing the most breathtaking of views and whilst inhaling deeply its intoxicating beauty and knowing that no man has been able poison a scenery so pure that its very existence reignites the essence of one’s Iman, I walked over this deserted paradise for 5 minutes to find to my amazement, a cricket match being played by a bunch of kids on top of a mountain. I just smiled and thought only Pathans are crazy enough to do this.I felt sorry for the bachara who had to fetch the ball when an Afridi wannabe ‘hit it out of the ground.’ I just pray that Swat regains its innocence and beauty someday.

‘Pathetic’ though it may seem, after verification it is the stance of more than one of the references (they wish to remain anonymous) that most would normally take local fataawa/guidance from. This includes those of different Islamic movements with knowledge of Pakistani politics.
There is no disagreement that the method of Fadlullah and his supporters is wrong, or that they are the perpetrators or that their killing is indiscriminate. There should also not be any doubt over the need to give as much support of whatever kind to those that have been affected by this continuing crisis, as a matter of priority.
The discussion is about the accuracy of labeling them as the khawarij and then applying on them our beloved Messenger’s corresponding advice (May Allah give him peace and blessings). Cursing them and fighting them would be easier to accept and adopt as an approach if there were other notables saying it too. Hence please excuse those of us who hesitate at this stage.
It would be interesting to know what Mufti Taqi says about the current situation.
I hope that the consequent comments on this thread do not deflect attention away from the original important post by AE. For those now in serious difficulty, the common reader of this blog can and must make a difference themselves by making dua, raising awareness, and spending from what Allah has bestowed upon them.
Upon the advice from others to limit any personal fitna, this is my last contribution on this thread. Wa billahi at-Tawfeeq.

Dear Nation!
As we know there are more than one million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) as a result of ongoing Army Operation in Malakand Division (Swat, Bonair, Deir).
This is even worst crisis compared to Earth Quake 2006 as most of the people were died in Earth quake where as today we have people struggling for their life lying open-sky, fighting hunger, without medical assistance and other necessities.
Our Media is busy giving coverage to the few camps giving an impression to the people that everything is under control where as the fact is that most of the refugee camps are in such worst conditions that we could not imagine the scenario and feel the grief while watching it on TV sets in our comfortable bedrooms.
We have to work with the same spirit we have shown in Earth Quake 2006, even more I would say. So brothers and sisters get up to help our people in dire need!

Right from the Valley….
Tragedy… One of the biggest displacement in the history… not of Pakistan, not of Muslims… but of the whole Human history!
I write this with utmost pain and discomfort, and I’m sure anyone who has a comprehending heart and mind will feel the same, provided he/she analyzes the situation with open eyes. I would urge all those who are blessed with Allah’s graces, and have the resources, to visit here if possible and see for themselves the most tragic and ironic reality, with their own eyes. What a mess we have created, with our own hands… and there’s nobody to blame, no one to point fingers at, as to who is responsible for this calamity… coz it’s only ourselves! … 3 million… these are not cattle and sheep, or cats and dogs… we are here talking about 3 million humans! … 3 million Muslims! … 3 million Pakistanis!
… and the count is rising!
I just came back from the inflicted areas. And will share what we saw and what we analyzed. I went there with a team of 10-12 from Karachi, including people from the business community, a well known welfare trust, based in khi ( also prominent for its extra ordinary relief efforts in the Earthquake), and renowned religious scholar, Syed Adnan Kakakhel ( Student Conference Islamabad, Musharraf Speech fame).
We went on an extensive study and enlightening circuit, from Islamabad to Mardan, to Takhtbhai, to Shergarh ( some 10-15kms away from where the curfew starts), back to mardan, then to Swaabi, to Tarakai, then to Nowshehra and Peshawar.
We visited many a camps, some run by welfare trusts, some run by religious institutions/ organizations, some run by NGOs, and a few by some generous local individuals who are indeed doing a great job, without any sort of funding from government or any other source, and only on their own resources. These people must be saluted for their efforts.
To give a clearer picture, these camps are scattered over a huge area, including various small cities and villages, and not concentrated in just one, two or three areas. This directly implies the humongous movement that is across the whole area below the SWAT and Malakand division, and people are continuously coming down the hills from North, towards South. There are rare means of transport available, since there is curfew enforced, majority travels this rocky, mountainous distance on bare foot. And trust me, they have moved out of their houses, many many of which are quite well off and of good financial stature, in no more than just plain clothes!! …
… to move into camps or to take refuge in mosques, schools, madrasaas,… on roadsides, along footpaths, in grounds… wherever they’d find a shade! Or precisely, wherever they’d find a corner!
I went to quite a few camps along with the team, and the situation cannot be explained be in words. This is a massive displacement! These camps, they are no more than a very temporary resort for the people moving in. I’m sure nobody amongst us can stand the scorching heat, in which these camps are like ovens! No human being can live in these camps, where it seems like not only the sun is fiery, the earth is also inflamed! There are no proper sanitation facilities, no utensils, no fans, no coolers, meager electricity and surely not enough medical facilities or medicines.
Women and children are the worst affected. Women have nowhere to go, they cant stand the pain and hunger of their children! Let alone, they don’t have anything for themselves! Just plain clothes, and that too been wearing for weeks now!
Children… literally cannot forget their questioning eyes! They have no idea what happened to them, why they have been moved out their houses, and when are they going to go back home! Home is what they miss… they don’t know who the talibans are, what they are doing, or who the government is, what they are doing… they have been punished and forsaken, for sins they haven’t done!
Even then… in their adolescence … they are rhyming the national anthem in those temporary sun baked schools, still chanting “Pakistan Zindabad” with all their enthusiasm! …
Sorrow…
We talked to a number of people… just common people, and asked them who they think is responsible for this. Most of them, if not all, blame the government and the army. Talibans, they deject and hate, but they don’t hold them responsible for moving them out of their houses!
A trust we went to, told us during the earthquake, they called up this person in swat, and on one phone call he donated 14 ton rice to this trust for the earthquake stricken. Today, that same person, is standing in their queue for 1 kg of rice for his family! He has come with nothing, but his wife and children! Has cheque books, but accounts frozen!
We went along with this trust to a number of houses, where the locals are sharing their houses, with limited resources, with the incoming refugees, and distributed packages of various rations, clothes, utensils and some cash by hand. Also disbursed donations collected from my own sources in a very short period, given to me by my friends and colleagues.
As a matter of fact, camps accumulate only 15-20% of the displaced people. The rest, 80-85% of the people are sharing homes with others, or are in schools, mosques, or as guests in hujras of locals, and therefore, are invisible! Inaccessible! Unlike those in camps, they have the shelter and shade, but are not getting any kind of relief or support. These people should be the focus, as they are in major concentration.
There’s a huge amount of work to be done, in all dimensions….
One thing, there is no substantial relief or cooperation from the government side. Even if it is there, its only in a few large camps, or those in cities like Peshawar and noshehra. So, that increases the disappointment and annoyance of people.
Yes, there are many trusts, individuals, religious parties and ngos working, and they are no doubt doing a great job, keeping in mind the limited resources they have.
There are operations and camps from UN, NGOs from Austria, and a few others, but these are limited and surely cannot accommodate a lot of people. Also visited a camp supported by Muslim Aid Foundation and UNHCR.
We also observed that there is sheer lack of communication and information. These people have no idea and no knowledge of what is happening around them, what is happening around in war affected areas, and in the rest of the country, when will it end, where is the government, where should they go for registration, who should they contact for only information!
Implicitly, this lack of information, absence of government officials, improper arrangements, and prolonged subjection to uncertainties prevailing around them is giving rise to frustration, anger and hatred! We literally foresee riots and chaotic uprising, which infact has already started there, in the form of road and traffic blocks, and demonstrations by the hunger stricken IDPs.
Karachi… we see due to childish acts and racial bias of one certain party, the people over there have very much disappointment regarding karachiites. We literally came across questions “Aap hamein Karachi mein kiyun nahi aanay detey ho??” and “Aap ne imran khan ko nahi aanay tou hamein kya aanay do gay!!”
This is certainly not good. This insurgency and frustration has already reached major cities, and if the attitude remains this of aloofness and discriminations, things will get worse in all parts of the country.
Observing right from here in valley and considering the socio economic impact of this displacement, if this imbalance and operations prolongs, the generation and children developing here will grow up with harsh feelings, no emotions, of frustration, anger and hatred, of snatching and might is right, and will only add to a new breed of these so called talibans, who are really not talibans, but criminals and socially depressed class!
Already, there are culprits and wolves lurking around the camps! Human wolves. Hidden in the form of volunteers or doctors or aides, they are trying to adapt children, or kidnap them, and women and girls… they need extreme concern! Criminals from all around the country are prowling around these areas to fulfill their own tasks. May Allah protect them all!
What needs to be done…
Huge relief measures, support programs, medical facilities, educational programs, food and rations, clothes and crockery, fans and shoes,… everything! Everything and anything that can contribute to the cause! Concrete programs to provide jobs/tasks/projects or work to the skilled and unskilled displaced, so that they can support themselves, even if its only partial. Measures to move them into rental houses, and proper buildings if the military activity prolongs. And then arrangements to make sure they can go back to their homes as soon as possible, and pressure on the government to complete this operation fast!
Ofcourse, this is on a larger scale. What we, as individuals can do is to donate as much as we can, with everything we possibly can, be it cash, clothes, utensils, or just moral support. Donate to who ever we trust and feel comfortable with. Support them with all available resources. But the call is to surely come forward and realize that this is a great human tragedy we are facing and must play our roles to minimize the sufferings.
We are also collecting donations, clothes and other stuff and making sure these reach the right people, mostly distributed by hand. You can make your contributions / donations / zakats, and we’ll make sure it reaches the deserving in the best manner, inshAllah.
Pakistan is in a state of war… and ironically, the rest of the country, including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta, or any other part or city of Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan, is not able to comprehend the intensity or gravity of the situation! There’s literally a war going on, within our country! We need to rise above social, racial and provincial bias and do all that we possibly can, be it only by word of mouth, be it only by showing support, if not by financial or material means, but help them! They had to move out their houses in just one day, without anything that they owned! They have lost their families… mothers looking for their children! Children looking for their fathers! Brothers in search of sisters! … and we are here trying how to make sure they don’t come here! Damn, they don’t want to come here! Or in Punjab! Or anywhere else! They just want to go back home! So why not make sure as long as they are out of their homes,
provide them with as much as we can!
If WE… All of US… don’t act now.. this land, these people, this country, this religion, … will never forgive us!
May Allah accept everyone’s efforts and may He give our brothers the patience and strength to stay steadfast in these testing times.
Many prayers for lasting peace in our country. Ameen.

Jazakallahu khayran for the update brother Haseeb. What you’ve said is accurate and underlines the importance of getting these folks back home.
As much pressure as possible needs to be applied to the Pakistani govt. to stop playing games with its people and give the army full support to completely wipe out and eradicate the disease of extremism in Swat now that many civilians are out of the way, once and for all.
—————————–
Cursing them and fighting them would be easier to accept and adopt as an approach if there were other notables saying it too. Hence please excuse those of us who hesitate at this stage.
I think it was Alan Sugar who said recently:
“Do you want a cushion mate? The amount of time you spend sitting on the fence…”
Don’t listen to this listless talk folks; we can’t do much about the huge forces of the “West” and the Secular regimes other than du’a and put pressure on them. As for those Muslims who have been at the root cause of all this fitnah for many years now, they are but small numbers with big mouths who can be and need to be defeated in every way possible and those who repent need to be pulled out and saved from destruction.

Kiff just got slapped off the fence
June 16, 2009 at 4:15 pm
I would be hesitant to ‘debate’ with my blood sister in public, because there are always hawks around waiting and take satisfaction in such things.
And then add salt and pepper to it.
June 16, 2009 at 6:03 pm
Salaam
It can be very easy for us sitting here in the UK or anywhere else infront of our over priced laptops typing away our opinions of the people in Swat or anywhere else, but the people who know best are those on the ground.
as Kiff said earlier that the local scholars and imams are not coming out in public but are advising in private then it doesnt give us much room to come out all guns blazing.
we should remember we are not the only concerned muslims in the world, and their are probably people in pakistan more concerned than us and possibly more knowledgable.
Unless those who propogate wiping these people out go and do it themselves or try and initiate such an action, quite frankly your statements dont have any value.
as Sayyind Qutub said: “Our words are dead until they are given life by our blood”.
Wallahu A’lam
June 16, 2009 at 7:53 pm
No-one got slapped off any fences. Grow up.
This is a matter of shari’ah and politics, not personal relations or indeed personalities. The truth should be more beloved to us than anything else, but if people wish to use salt and pepper instead, good luck to them.
And Nasar: it’s Ustadh Kifayat to you. And I think it’s better you study that little bit more and think before you open your mouth again here or indeed put fingers to laptop. And try your best not to teach me about my people again. Period.

Apologies if anybody thought I was trying to add salt or pepper.
It was a humorous statement not one to cause fitna.
May Allah keep all brothers united and keep shaytaan away from spreading discord amongst brothers.
